Times are tough for everyone, and this can lead to a lack of medical care for some people. Hospital emergency rooms have long since noticed more people coming in for non-emergency visits, but now they’re seeing a new trend: More people are showing up for their teeth, as well.

Nationwide, ER visits for tooth care increased 16% between 2006 and 2009. Not only is this much more expensive than seeing a dentist (an ER visit can easily cost over $1,000), but ER staff are generally not trained to deal with these problems. Doctors will offer pain relief and antibiotics to treat infection, but no real solution; so these patients often end up going back again because the root cause of the problem was not dealt with.
The poor economy is certainly at the core of the issue. Fewer companies are offering proper insurance to their employees and fewer people are able to afford their own insurance; therefore, fewer people are seeing a dentist regularly.
