The Seven Most Memorable Smiles of All Time
Before we even begin to speak, our facial expressions convey more than we could ever say with words. So much can be said with just a smile, and the visual memory leaves a lasting impression on us in a way that words cannot. Some smiles (whether good, bad or ugly) can stay in our hearts and minds for generations. Here’s a look at some of the most memorable smiles of all time.
1. The Cheshire Cat
Lewis Carrol first introduced this grinning cat to us in his 1865 novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The Cheshire Cat gained true fame in 1951 with the Disney adaptation, and his distinctive grin has been embedded in our minds ever since. He has recently enjoyed a boost in popularity thanks Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland.
2. The Mona Lisa
Centuries old and still well known by people all over the globe, now that’s a famous smile. This work was painted by Leonardo da Vinci between 1503 and 1506. It was one of the first paintings to portray a real subject with an imaginary background.
3. Madonna
Madonna herself is already an icon, but her smile is distinctly recognizable by the slight gap in her front teeth. Still, there is something to be said for keeping the look through all these years.

4. Jack Sparrow
A grungy smile and mismatched teeth are not enough to stop fangirls everywhere from swooning over Johnny Depp’s character Captain Jack Sparrow. The legendary Pirates of the Caribbean character has four gold teeth on top and two silver teeth on the bottom.
5. Jack Torrence
Quite possibly the most memorable yet terrifying smile yet – Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of Jack Torrence in The Shining. This haunting image is undoubtedly burned into the minds of many.
6. Lestat
What collection of smiles would be complete without a vampire smile? There’s just something so captivating about those fangs slightly protruding with every smile. The famous vampire Lestat has been played by both Tom Cruise and Stuart Townsend in Interview With the Vampire and Queen of the Damned respectively, and both were greeted with great popularity.
7. The Joker
You didn’t think we’d forget, did you? This legendary grinning supervillain first appeared in an issue of the Batman comic series in 1940. Since then he has been revamped and portrayed in multiple different comics, T.V. shows and movies, with the most notable adaptations being Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger.
