Do I Need a Dental Crown?
If a tooth has a severe cavity, or it is decayed, cracked, or brittle, a dental crown can be used to strengthen and restore it. Dental crowns are also used alongside implants or bridges to replace missing teeth. You might consider getting dental crowns in Las Vegas if any of the following are true:
- One or more teeth are missing anywhere in your mouth
- A tooth is noticeably discolored
- A tooth has broken, cracked, or is brittle and painful
- A tooth is weakened from decay, causing difficulty while chewing or speaking
What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is also called a “tooth cap,” and this is a fairly good description. The dental crown covers the exposed surface of the existing tooth and “caps” it. It may be made of metal, porcelain, ceramic, or a combination of these materials. The dental crown is specially crafted to look and feel like a real tooth, except in the cases of all-metal crowns, which are generally only used in the back of the mouth.
What’s Involved in the Dental Crown Procedure?
The dental crown process itself is fairly straightforward. After contacting one of Boston Dental Group’s offices, the process will be as follows:
Step 1: Consultation
First the dentist will inspect your teeth and assess the damage. They will most likely take x-rays to see the condition of the tooth’s roots. At this stage they will tell you about your dental options, and what comes next if you decide to get a dental crown.
Step 2: Teeth Shaping
For the crown to fit properly, the decayed or damaged parts of teeth must be removed. This will also help to prevent further damage to the tooth or surrounding teeth. If the core of the tooth isn’t strong enough to support the crown, the dentist will need to reinforce it. For all of these processes, you’ll receive anesthesia. Then, the shaped tooth will be covered with a temporary crown.
Step 3: Crown Placement
Your permanent crown is made and shaped especially for your mouth, so you can talk, bite and chew as you normally would. At this final stage, your dentist will remove the temporary crown and fit the specially crafted crown to your tooth.

Types of Dental Crowns
The biggest difference between the types of dental crowns available is the materials they are made of. Materials affect the appearance of the crown and it’s longevity. Most people prefer dental crowns that look like their real teeth, both in color and shape. However, in some cases, such as back molars that aren’t readily visible, metal crowns can be a good choice because of their additional strength. Your dentist can help you choose the right type of crown depending on the condition and position of the weakened tooth. Your dentist might suggest any of the following:
Metal Crowns
These may be made of stainless steel or a combination of gold, platinum, cobalt, chromium or nickel.
Resin Crowns
Dental resin is a combination of plastic and glass that is non-toxic and safe for your mouth. This may be used for smaller chips or fractures, since it is not as sturdy as other crowns.
Ceramic or Porcelain Crowns
These types of crowns look nearly identical to real teeth, however they do not last as long as some other types of crowns.
Porcelain or Ceramic and Metal Crowns
The outside of the crown is covered with porcelain or ceramic to give it the appearance of a real tooth, while the bottom is metal to give it additional strength.

The first person who I spoke with was Juliana. I was on my way to the dentist. I was worried that I was not going to find the location. She assured me that I would find Boston Dental. First time here and I had a great experience! I was brought back almost immediately, where Carlos, the dental assistant, did the flossing and polishing. Vicki, the dental hygienist, did my cleaning and gave me an informative lesson on why I should be flossing. I told her ahead of time that I had sensitive teeth on the bottom and she was very gentle in that area, unlike some other cleanings that I’ve had. Overall, I was out in about 45 min. Super quick and efficient!

This place is absolutely fantastic, fun, & clean! I've always wanted to get braces put on but never could because almost every dentist in vegas requires care credit and have money upfront. This place was the only place I could find that allows me to do payment plan out of pocket!!! My monthly visits has been quick. My very first visit here for consultation I had my two young toddlers( 2 & 4) with me and I decided to go ahead and get braces put on. the staff asked if they could take my children and play with them while I was getting braces put in. Right thn and there I immediately knew this was the best place to be! Truly caring and wonderful staff. I will never go anywhere else!!

The staff is so nice and helpful here! I got my rubberbands changed to white by choice and upon seeing myself in the mirror I realized this was not a good choice. I walked back into the office and they took care of me immediately and helped change my rubberbands back to clear within minutes. Amazing work! Would recommend to everyone!

INCREDIBLE DENTIST & STAFF! I called around endlessly asking if any dentist was able to take a walk in and in net work with my insurance last minute! Hallelujah Boston Dental was able to squeeze me in! I had severe pain for two days prior. I was greeted by the front desk ladies who were all smiles, and then Mr. Potter took me in the back to begin examination. He was so fantastic! Dr. Justice came in after to look everything over, he was incredibly patient with me and broke everything down so it was easy to understand and super in depth. They were not forceful in me making decisions, which I’ve had in the past. They both had GREAT senses of humor, which is always a plus! I had to remove my two bottom wisdom teeth, and it was already at the end of their day but they stayed late to get the job done! I have struggled to find a dentist, but I THANKFULLY stumbled upon this office in an emergency and I think it’s safe to say they are my full time dentist!

Growing up in Washington State, I was never afraid of the dentist. I moved to Las Vegas over 10 years ago and visited a few dentists. I felt they were wreckless and didn't care. I became afraid and so did my husband and kids. We finally went to Boston Dental, where we are getting the best treatment. By far Boston Dental makes my family comfortable. The staff is amazing and it doesn't matter what we go in for we know we will be well treated and cared for. Getting my teeth deep cleaned feels like I am at a spa. My husband who has always been afraid of the dentist was able to go in and get his root canal without having to be put out. My son has gotten his braces and my daughter has no cavities! Just simply the best and right across the street from me. I recommend Boston Dental to all my family and friends!
